Inspiring speech by Steve Jobs you've got to watch!

I'm pretty sure most of you have seen this video of Steve Jobs' 2005 Stanford Commencement Address, but I find it so inspiring that I thought I'd post it up here and summarize it for you (cuz I'm cool like that)!

Check out the video:

Srly, you should check out the video - yes, it's a little long but worth it. However, here is a short summary of the video!

Steve Job's has three main points in this video. Let's begin with point one:

Connecting the Dots

I love this. It has to do with trust. Trusting that the universe will take care of you, trusting that everything that happens to you happens for a reason. And trusting yourself and your instinct to guide you.

Had Steve (we're on first name basis now) not dropped out of college and joined a calligraphy class just because he had a passion for it even though it had no practical application in his life at the time, then he wouldn't have learnt about multiple typefaces and proportionately spaced fonts. If Steve had just concentrated on 'how to make his millions' and not just trusted his passionate pull then we might not have ended up with such lovely typography on our computers.

The point is, when we have an interest in something we should honor that, even if it doesn't seem to make sense at the time, even if it doesn't seem to align to your life goal. Because like Steve says:

"You can't connect the dots looking forwards, only looking back. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something - your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. Because believing that the dots will connect down the road will give you the confidence to follow your heart even when it leads you off the well worn path, and that will make all the difference."

Love and Loss

When Steve was very publicly fired from Apple in 1985 he was devastated. How can you get fired from a company that you started right? Well, he did but instead of letting this pull him off his path, Steve decided to focus on what he loved, and he loved what he did. He had been rejected but he was still in love.

"The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything..."

It was during this time that he started companies like Next and Pixar. Had he focused his energy on being fired, losing face and all other negative stuff, Steve might not be where he is today. Instead he remembered what brought him here to begin with, and focused on what he loved.

"Sometimes life is going to hit you over the head with a brick. Don't lose faith"

"You've got to find what you love, and that is as true for work as is it your lovers... if you haven't found it, keep looking don't settle"

Death

"Remembering that you are going to die is the best way to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart"

====================

I will leave you with a quote from the speech:

Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life.

Don't be trapped by Dogma whis is living with the results of other people's thinking.

Don't let the noise of other's opinion drown out your own inner voice.

And most importantly, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become.

Everything else is secondary.

What do you think of this speech? I absolutely love it! Give me your opinions in the comments below!

Thanks for reading!
